Offices of Newsday Newspaper searched

February 13, 2012

Trinidad and Tobago’s Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs has responded to calls to account for the decision of police officers to conduct a search at the offices of the Newsday Newspaper and at the home of one of its senior journalists.

The search was carried out by nine officers of the Anti-Corruption Investigation Bureau (ACIB), who were armed with a warrant to seize items which may assist them in their investigation into a report made by the Integrity Commission.

The report by the Commission comes on the heels of an article written by Andre Bagoo last December, highlighting an internal rift between the Commission's chairman, Ken Gordon, and its vice-chairman, Gladys Gafoor.

In a statement to the media, issued yesterday, Gibbs said the officers of the ACIB are "peace officers".

He said these officers were in possession of a legitimate search warrant, which provided them with the authority to carry out a search for evidence.
